What’s your favorite book and who is your favorite author?
¿Cuál es tu libro favorito y quién es tu autor favorito?

My favorite book would have to be In 27 Days by Alison Gervais as for my favorite author, I do not have one since I regularly choose to read something new every time, so I have yet to find that one author that’ll keep me drawn in with every piece.

Do you have any special hobbies or talents?
¿Tienes pasatiempos especiales o talentos?

When I’m not writing I choose to partake in either gymnastics or cheerleading, because it’s a way to completely dissociate myself and channel my stress into a positive form of exercise.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
¿Cuál es tu cosa favorita a cerca de la escritura?

Whether it's writing for yourself or for someone else, there’s just that sort of freedom with writing. The freedom of privacy with writing, and the freedom to project so much with just one word or phrase. The fact that your work can have such an impact on someone is something that is empowering and humbling.

What’s your favorite memory of 826CHI?
¿Cuál es tu recuerdo favorito de 826 CHI?

I haven’t really been here long but I really enjoy the days where we just focus on writing. I feel like I never have any time to write at home or outside of my responsibilities, and when I do, I never have any ideas or prompts to build off of but with 826 I finally make time for writing and since we have to follow a specific prompt or build off of stories I wouldn’t normally read, so I’d say any memory there where we just dedicate it to writing time is my favorite.

What is your favorite piece that you've written at 826CHI?
My favorite piece so far would have to be the one we are currently working on which is a build on what we would write about if we had a column. My piece specifically is about something so important to me and a lot of people about identity and bringing light to the marginalized.

Do you have writing advice for other students?
¿Tienes consejos de escritura para los otros alumnos?

Write about what you care about. If someone has a disagreeing opinion, that is perfectly okay. No one is always going to agree with what you choose to say or write about, but there will always be at least one person who is being given a voice with your writing, even if it’s your own, confidence is what’ll make you stand out more.

What do you want to do when you’re an adult?
¿Que quieres hacer cuando seas grande?

I want to live a very calm and happy life like most wish. Knowing myself, I’ll probably find some way to make it chaotic and that is something I am completely okay with as long as I live out my days being happy. My plan is to go to university, possibly med school, invest, and then open up my own companies outside of whatever field I chose as my major.

What’s something else you want the world to know about you?
¿Que es otra cosa quieres que el mundo sepa de ti?
There is truly nothing I haven’t already said, but when I start raking in the big bucks, party on my yacht.

If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
¿Si podrías a cualquier parte del mundo mañana, donde irias?
Without thinking about the consequences of messing with time and space, if I could go anywhere tomorrow I’d go to Magnolia, a made up world with magic, wizards, and friends who’ll never leave you behind.

Our work together

Our 826 Day event on the roof of Ace Hotel Chicago was a beautiful celebration of our community from our donors to our students and everyone in between (pictured above is 826CHI supporter TASHA’s performance). Our book P.S. You Sound Like Someone I Can Trust  was available in the hotel’s suites, Ace Hotel Chicago has hosted our annual love-themed print show featuring work by local artists inspired by our students writing on love, and their Senior Sales Manager, Tenasha Wilcoxon, spoke to our students in After-School Tutoring & Writing’s Speakers & Snacks series about what it’s like to work at a hotel.

Our Work Together

The partnership between East Village Youth Program and 826CHI is a yearly collaboration to help students achieve their goal of being accepted into their college of choice and for many to be the first in their family to attend college. This fall, 826CHI staff and 12 volunteers worked with 13 high school seniors on their personal statements for college applications. The partnership continues in the Spring when 826CHI and volunteers will return to EVYP to support students as they apply for scholarships.
